Volcán Azul SL28

This is our second year working with Alejo's Volcan Azul.

If you’re interested in a specialty, single-origin coffee that showcases varietal uniqueness (SL28) and the micro-lot approach of a high-end farm like Volcán Azul, this is a very strong choice.
It’s a “when you want something special” rather than everyday. If your taste tends toward appreciating subtlety, high clarity, and varietal character (rather than just heavy roast or strong body) this will likely reward you.

Produced by the esteemed estate Volcán Azul, located in Alajuela, Costa Rica, this lot is grown by producer Alejo Castro Kahle at an altitude of approximately 1,500–1,600 metres above sea level.

The farm resides on rich volcanic soils—on the slopes of the Barva and Poás volcanoes—contributing to its terroir-driven complexity.

The varietal is the highly regarded SL28 — originally from Kenya — chosen for its exceptional cup potential. On the Volcán Azul estate, the varietal is planted with care and subject to rigorous quality standards, despite its higher susceptibility to disease compared with other varieties.

Longer fermentation (e.g., 5 days at ~22 °C), patio drying, mechanical finishing. This results in richer, more layered fruit and subtle fermentation complexity.

About the farm: The history of Volcan Azul and Alejo’s family is deeply intertwined with the development of Costa Rica’s coffee industry. The family’s journey began in the early 19th century with Alejo Castro Jiménez in Costa Rica and Wilhelm Kahle in the south of Mexico after acquiring land in the fertile highlands of Costa Rica. Today this place is referred to as Hacienda Colima, a farm still owned and operated by Alejo.
